The new Bollettino Postale Per Passaporto Elettronico of 13 December 2014 regulates the rules for the issuance and renewal of an ID card of new generation, called "Passaporto Elettronico" (e-Passport). This is a key document for those who want to start this process. It contains WHO CAN APPLY FOR AN e-PASSPORT, WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED FOR AN e-PASSPORT and HOW TO START THE PROCESS OF APPLYING FOR AN e-PASSPORT. The main change of the 13 December 2014 edition is that you no longer have to apply at a police station, but directly at "Poste Italiane" (Italian Post Office) by filling in an electronic form available from its website. In Italy you need to have an Italian identity card, called codice fiscale or codice identificativo persone fisiche (CIPF), to be able to apply for a passport. The new e-Passport entitles the holder also to the CIPF number. The document containing this number is called Carta d'Identità Elettronica (cybernetic identification card). The list of the 22 documents that need to be printed and submitted with the application is shown in the table below:For an application it is not mandatory to have a photo on file. The data will be uploaded on request. However, for national identity card, if the applicant cannot print these data, he/she must file a declaration of unavailability before submitting the application form. As each e-Passport is only valid for five years, by filing for renewal you will automatically register all your past applications and you will prevent any delay in issuing a new passport. The period of validity of the e-Passport is five years, but it can be renewed before its expiry date. However, by filing for renewal you will automatically register all your past applications and you will prevent any delay in issuing a new passport, that would otherwise take place because your data would be incomplete. The Police or other law enforcement authorities may ask an applicant to provide additional documents in order to clarify the purpose of the trip abroad. When traveling to countries outside the EU, it is necessary to show a valid passport. In order to get your passport or e-Passport, you need to make an appointment online, providing the required documentation. The application for a passport is made in writing and includes 22 documents. The applicant must also declare whether he/she has ever been convicted, or currently is being proceeded against, in Italy and abroad for an offense that carries a maximum custodial sentence of at least four years. The applicant must also provide information on his/her journey plans and the nature of any business activities abroad. Police authorities may ask for additional documentation in order to clarify the purpose of the trip abroad. For an application it is not mandatory to have a photo on file. The data will be uploaded on request. cfa1e77820
